The next few days are going to be a whirlwind because my life is about to start. Monday is the start of my semester, the first day at my internship, first day of both SO and I having outside/not together plans, and the beginning of my financial fast.

Internship

I start my internship at 9:30 am today. When this posts, I’ll be riding the Metro to work. I do not enjoy the metro but it is better than an hour-long walk. I am terrified to start for some reason. I do not know what to expect, who will be there, or what I’ll be doing. Yet, this is an amazing opportunity to work closely with attorneys in the same field I want to work.

The SO keeps reminding me that I am an intern, so my supervisor will not expect perfection on the first try of any assignment. That is helping, slightly. Although I know this specific place is not hiring until 2015, the possibility to have a job eventually is something that is making me want to be perfect.

Here’s hoping it goes smoothly and I do not get lost on the Metro.

Living Together

We’ve eaten out three times in five days and for us, this is a great improvement. Learning to live in another person’s space is quite challenging but I am confident we will work everything out with time. There have been no major disagreements, overall. Nonetheless, I am struggling with feeling like I belong here still. The SO did not clear off a shelf or drawer for me, there’s no space on the desk for me to place my stuff, and I do not know where to put anything. I do not enjoy sleeping against the wall because I feel claustrophobic, and I get the impression I am doing everything wrong no matter what I am doing.

Time will solve everything. I know it will take time for me to feel like I belong here and to find a space for everything… and figure out all the SO’s routines.

This week will be a struggle for us to figure out how to deal with both of our schedules and making dinner each night. It’ll be hard to not want to go out after the first few days and celebrate or just relax and not worry about cooking or dishes; however, we will be frugal.

Finances

Let me say, I am glad that I understand how to read school accounts sometimes because as I was looking over mine on Friday I discovered a huge mistake! This is the first semester I had to purchase the school’s insurance since I will be dropped from my mom’s plan at 12:01 am on my birthday – I tried explaining that because I wasn’t born until 11 pm that day I should be able to keep my insurance for a few extra hours but it didn’t work.

Well, I already requested a loan increase on December 18 that was approved and paid for the insurance using said money on December 29. However, my school charged my account again for the insurance premium on January 7 and decreased my loan reimbursement by that amount.

Of course they will (I assume) quickly fix this but as of 5 PM on Friday I had not heard anything. This means that my check was already mailed to me for a lesser amount or I will have to wait longer to receive my check while they correct the issue. Hopefully I will receive some response on Monday so I can stop bumming money of SO for every day random expenses.

Also, I applied to two Starbucks stores on Friday (or maybe it was Thursday). After entering my availability – this was actually quite difficult since I don’t know how long I’ll need for commuting or what my internship schedule is – I checked online and realized that most of the local stores close by 10 pm. Well, I put my availability as like 7pm – 7am … so I do not think that will push me to the top of any list.

Hopefully, I’ll receive a call soon and I can clarify when I can work during the hours the store is open. People think I am crazy for having two degrees and practically begging to work at Starbucks while finishing law school BUT seriously, this has been a dream of mine since 8th grade. Is it crazy? Yes. Does it make sense? Not entirely. Yet, if I work there I’ll receive a discount that will allow me to actually drink good coffee during bar preparations AND I need the money to cover rent and bills during the next six to nine months.
